The Trichotomy of Jobs, Goals, and Time

You may hear career advice that sounds a lot like “You can do whatever you want!” or “Do what makes you happy!” This is completely backwards. You can only want goals. Not jobs. This is because a job is a means to a goal. You can set whatever goal you want, but your job should only exist in pursuit of that goal. You may want a million dollars. No one will give you a million dollars. You have to earn a million dollars. How do you earn a million dollars? Well, you better find a job that has the salary and benefits to align yourself with that goal. But even then it's not enough, because it has to be multiplied by time. Time is the factor that moves us forward in life. Regardless of where we are aligned, we will move forward. Are we moving toward or away from our goals? There is no waiting. There is no stopping. There is only pressing on, whether that's what you want or not. Imagine going to an airport and getting on a random plane and then freaking out when you land in Moscow. Yeah, that sucks, but what did you expect?

There is an importance to this trichotomy: jobs, goals, and time. You can call it “stickiness.” Truly, you can do whatever you want in life. But you must stick to it. At least until you have definitively found success in that thing. Sticking to a thing, anything, is how you achieve your goals. Assuming, of course, that thing can logically have any way of resulting in said goal. This is where I think career coaching can come into play. It's unlikely that you know exactly what can lead to where. Someone with experience might be able to tell you.

Anyways, life is not about what you want.

It's about what you do, multiplied by time. Hopefully that leads you where you want to go.
